Palaro Day 5: NCR Anchors Overall Lead as Western Visayas Chases CALABARZON in Elementary Thriller

AGUSAN DEL SUR – As the afternoon sun beat down on the main stadium of the Democrito O. Plaza Memorial Sports Complex, Day 5 of Palarong Pambansa 2026 delivered exactly what the fans had gathered to see: grit, legacy, and a fierce battle for regional supremacy. With only a few days remaining in the country’s ultimate grassroots sporting event, the pressure on the tracks, courts, and mats reached a boiling point as regions fought to solidify their spots on the national leaderboard.

At the center of it all stood the podium—the ultimate destination for months of grueling training, sweat, and sacrifice. Under the bright blue Agusan skies, student-athletes proudly stepped up to receive their hard-earned medals, surrounded by cheering teammates and the proud banners of their respective home regions.

The Big Picture: NCR Holds the Line

According to the official Day 5 medal tally board, the powerhouse National Capital Region (NCR) remains the team to beat in the overall standings. Driven by a dominant performance from their secondary division athletes, the Big City contingent pushed their overall haul to an impressive 36 Gold, 25 Silver, and 30 Bronze medals.

NCR’s secondary athletes essentially carried the day, capturing 29 of the region’s 36 golds, leaving rival delegations scrambling to keep pace in the high-school division.

The Elementary Battleground: Region IV-A and Region VI Clash

While NCR looks comfortable at the top of the overall leaderboard, the real drama unfolded in the Elementary Division, where a spectacular tug-of-war is happening for the grassroots crown.

Region IV-A (CALABARZON) managed to hold onto the top spot in the elementary category, clutching 15 Golds, 11 Silvers, and 8 Bronzes. However, they can hear the heavy breathing of Region VI (Western Visayas) right behind them. The Western Visayas elementary delegation turned on the jets by Day 5, surging into second place with 13 Golds, 8 Silvers, and 8 Bronzes, threatening to overtake the leadership if their momentum carries into tomorrow’s finals.
