Grupo Ilonggo de Saltatores dominates Sinamba sa Regatta 2026
The rhythmic beating of the drums and the vibrant swirl of colors returned to the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand as the 53rd Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival reached its explosive climax. On February 28, 2026, the Sinamba sa Regatta street dance competition once again proved why it is the crown jewel of Iloilo’s maritime cultural celebrations.
A Legacy Continued: Grupo Ilonggo de Saltatores
In a stunning display of precision, storytelling, and high-energy choreography, Grupo Ilonggo de Saltatores from Jalandoni Memorial National High School (JMNHS) emerged as the Grand Champion of Sinamba sa Regatta 2026. This victory marks a significant milestone for the group, as they successfully defended their title and solidified their reputation as a powerhouse in the festival scene.
The group didn’t just win the top prize; they staged a near-total sweep of the minor awards. Their performance—a masterclass in synchronization that blended traditional samba rhythms with the “Paraw” sailing heritage—earned them the awards for Best in Streetdance, Best in Choreography, and Best in Performance.
The stakes for this year’s competition were higher than ever. During the awarding ceremony, it was officially announced that Grupo Ilonggo de Saltatores has received a prestigious invitation to represent Iloilo City at the Aliwan Fiesta 2026 in Metro Manila this coming May although the latest news tells the national event will be postponed this year.
Ellen Fullido, representing the Aliwan organizers, praised the “transformation and polished presentation” of the Sinamba, noting that the festival has grown into a world-class cultural product capable of competing against the biggest festivals in the Philippines.
The Podium Finishers
While JMNHS took the crown, the competition was a testament to the incredible talent blooming in the city’s schools and dance companies:
1st Runner-Up: Grupo na Sidlangan (Sidlangan Dance Company) – A favorite among the crowd, they took home Best in Costume, Best in Music, and Best in Original Composition.
2nd Runner-Up: Grupo Sentenilas Do Jaro (Jaro National High School) – This group wowed the judges with their storytelling and was awarded Best in Production Design.
3rd Runner-Up: Grupo Bailarines del Manduryaw (Mandurriao National High School) – Their infectious energy earned them the People’s Choice Award.
4th Runner-Up: Grupo Danza Forteza (Fort San Pedro National High School) – Recognized for their impeccable conduct and sportsmanship with the Best in Discipline award.
Sailing Forward, Guided by Tradition
Under the theme “Sailing Forward, Guided by Tradition,” the 2026 Sinamba sa Regatta served as more than just a dance-off. It was a rhythmic tribute to the Ilonggo seafarers and the iconic paraw sailboats that have defined the region’s identity for centuries.
As the sun set over the Iloilo Strait, the 2026 edition of the Sinamba sa Regatta left a clear message: Iloilo’s culture is not just a relic of the past, but a living, breathing fire that continues to burn brighter with every beat of the drum.
