Iloilo City Hosts WordCamp Philippines 2026: Tech, Community, and AI Take Center Stage at ICON

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The modern skyline of Mandurriao was filled with dynamic tech energy as web developers, agency owners, digital creators, and tech students gathered for WordCamp Philippines 2026. Held on August 28–29, 2026, at the Iloilo Convention Center (ICON), the flagship open-source gathering highlighted the country’s growing tech scene.

By bringing together hundreds of attendees from across the archipelago, the two-day event established Iloilo City not only as the cultural heart of the Visayas, but also as a growing epicenter for digital innovation and open-source collaboration.

Day 1: Community and Code at Contributor Day

The conference kicked off on Friday, August 28, with Contributor Day—a hands-on, community-driven gathering where participants contribute back to the open-source software powering over 40% of the global web.

Rather than standard lectures, the convention floor became a collaborative workspace where attendees brought their ongoing WordPress projects, troubleshooting issues alongside experienced mentors. Participants broke into at least eight specialized working groups, drawing web enthusiasts from various regions across the Philippines.  Among the hundreds of participants, there were 25 foreign participants from 15 different countries.

Each table focused on a critical aspect of the ecosystem:

• Core Development & Bug Fixing: Troubleshooting PHP, JavaScript, and database integration issues for live site builds.
• Theme & Plugin Security: Reviewing code standards and patching security vulnerabilities.
• Design & User Experience (UX): Crafting modern design systems and optimizing site navigation.
• Localization & Translation: Translating WordPress interface strings into regional Philippine languages.
• Community Outreach & Documentation: Creating accessible guides for beginners and organizing local user groups.

The collaborative session allowed student attendees to work alongside seasoned professionals, gaining real-time technical guidance and contributing code directly to global repositories.

Day 2: Multitrack Insights and the AI Frontier

On Saturday, August 29, the conference expanded into a multitrack learning summit. The convention center’s halls were organized to accommodate concurrent presentations, catering to various experience levels and technical focus areas:

• Luzon Hall (Plenary & Track 1): Main-stage keynotes, industry panels, and forward-looking discussions on digital transformation and business scaling.
• Mindanao Hall (Track 2): In-depth technical workshops, developer masterclasses, and actionable strategies for freelancers and site builders.
• Visayas Hall (Sponsor & Exhibition Hub): The central networking floor housing interactive partner booths and community displays.

Throughout both tracks, speakers from local startups, established agencies, and global organizations shared best practices on workflow optimization, client management, and website performance.

However, the overarching topic across almost every session was Artificial Intelligence (AI). Presenters explored how generative AI is reshaping the web development lifecycle—from AI-driven code generation and automated testing to ethical considerations, copyright challenges, and search engine optimization in an AI-dominated landscape.

A highlight of the conference was the featured talk by Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue. A pioneer in Philippine ICT advocacy and countryside tech development, Atty. Batapa-Sigue addressed the legal, ethical, and strategic challenges of navigating AI. Her talk highlighted the need for responsible AI adoption, urging creators and businesses to balance technological automation with human integrity, copyright protections, and digital inclusion across regional economies.

A Buzzing Exhibition Hub: Global Sponsors and Local Heritage

Beyond the conference halls, the Visayas Hall remained a high-energy focal point throughout the second day. Major global sponsors and industry brands set up interactive exhibits, providing live product demonstrations, enterprise consultations, and customized giveaways.

The event featured a diverse lineup of major ecosystem partners:

Exhibitors welcomed attendees with custom swag bags containing branded apparel, stickers, developer cheat sheets, and tech gadgets. The steady stream of interactive booth activities kept attendees engaged between speaker tracks, encouraging networking between local talent and international tech brands.

Adding a distinct local touch to the technology exposition, Iloilo City Tourism Officers set up an official pavilion within the exhibit area on Day 2. Tourism representatives shared regional guidebooks and heritage literature, offering visitors a taste of famous Ilonggo hospitality. This integration of local government advocacy highlighted the partnership between regional tourism and the growing digital economy.   ILOVA, a notable local developer community, also joined the exhibits and invited local developers to join their group.
